Forts are those key witnesses in the annals of history with each one of them having a unique background and history. The forts and citadels have been a witness to several historic moments, victories, conquests, and defeat of many noted rulers and empires. Telangana state is home to many such numerous forts, which stands as a testimony to the reign of many dynasties in this region that influenced its culture, destiny, and traditions. Nirmal is a prominent town, which was once part of former Adilabad district. It is now a district headquarters, owing to its unique significance.
The town is known for its glorious past related to the patronization of arts and handicrafts by the ruling nobility. The region was ruled by the Kakatiyas, Chalukyas, Qutb Shahis and Asaf Jahis who have all contributed in great measure to its history and heritage. This legacy of Nirmal’s heritage is visible in this town where the French had established a formidable presence by constructing a magnificent fort, which stands majestically even to this day.
The French were reportedly very impressed by the scenic beauty of nature here and built the Nirmal fort. It is also called as the Shamgarh fort. There is also another version, where it is believed it was first built by the Rastrakutas and later it was developed by Qutub Shahis followed by the French making important additions and strengthening the fort during the rule of Asaf Jahis.
The fort has quite a few impressive features, lending great significance to the strong ramparts here on a hillock. There are many old, historic cannons located in the premises of this fort which is widely known for its unique architecture. There are about 170 steps leading to this fort situated on top of the hillock. Apart from its heritage prominence, this fort is also a great tourist attraction, due to the scenic environment. The fort is located close to the national highway, connecting Hyderabad with North India. The fort is considered an engineering marvel, due to the expertise of French Engineers. A visit to the great Nirmal Fort, is indeed a worthwhile experience!
