Forts are one of the most significant structures, which played an important role in defenses and also in projecting the strength of yesteryear dynasties and rulers. Nagunur Fort (also spelled Nagnoor) was a majestic and impressive fort built by the rulers of Kakatiya dynasty. It is located in the village of Nagunur, around 10 km to the north of Karimnagar town. The fort stands a great testimony to the royal splendor of the Kakatiyas. It stands a symbol of Kakatiya dynasty and the fort complex contains the ruins of a cluster of KalyaniChalukya and Kakatiya temples
The pillars and galleries of the historic Shiva temple here are very attractive. The most significant temple in the complex is the Shiva temple, which has a total of three shrines. The main entrance to this temple is towards the northern side while the three shrines face the rest three directions. The temple has been built using red stone while the three shrines are placed on a raised pedestal, i.e. Upapitha.
The prominent portions of the temple decor features detailed and artistic sculptures that adorn the frames of the doors and the beams which rests on the central pillar. The detailing of these sculptures is considered quite historic, which defies the age of the temple. The beams of this Shiva temple features sculptured images of royal musicians playing the traditional Mridangam and other musical instruments surrounding the Gods and Goddesses. There are panels carved with clearly depicted visuals of dancers in brilliant poses.
