Massive Dam in a Picturesque Setting!

It is onekilometer long, with 26 crest gates. The project has a catchment area of roughly 215000 sq.km with the largest canal system network in India.
The dam can store more than 305 TMC feet of water in the reservoir. It is also one of the earliest projects built for irrigation as well as hydro power generation, in post-independent India. The dam has two canals, namely the left and right canals which supply water from the reservoir. According to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the dam was envisioned to be a temple of modern India. Apart from meeting drinking water needs, irrigation and power requirements, this dam is an attractive tourist destination owing to the large reservoir.
