Spotting the Big Cat in Telangana!
Telangana is a state which is immensely blessed with forests and pristine wildlife destinations that attract tourists from all over. Tiger, the national animal can be spotted in three main wildlife sanctuaries of the state namely Kawal, Farhabad and Eturnagaram.
Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary
Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary at Jannaram is one of the important wildlife sanctuaries in India. The sanctuary is home to several varieties of flora and fauna and in order to catch a glimpse of wild animals in their natural habitat, Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-see place. Thousands of tourists visit this secluded animal kingdom to experience the beauty of the dense forest with teak, bamboo and many other varieties of trees.
The sanctuary houses several species animals including Cheetal, Sambar, Barking Deer, Nilgai, Sloth Bear, Indian Bison, Panther and Tiger. Tourists can also find reptiles like Crocodile, Python, Monitor Lizard, Star Tortoise and Cobra, in this wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary also provides jeep safaris, and bird watching trips to spot several rare animals in their natural habitat. Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve
The Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, spread over Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool districts of Telangana is one of the largest Tiger reserves in the country. The Tiger Sanctuary is known for its breath taking scenic beauty.
Situated in the deciduous Nallamala forests, the mystifying landscape of the lofty hills and echoing valleys, exciting winding roads, perennial rivers, is this most charismatic world of the wild cats. It is a true wild paradise. The mighty River Krishna flowsacross Nallamala tiger reserve. It is located in the dense Nallamalla Forest (AmrabadTiger Reserve) in Nagarkurnool District, Telangana State. The entrance gate is located on Mannanur – Srisailam highway road and it is about 16 kilometers from Mannanur Forest check post. Farhabad view point is about 9 kilometers from Farhabad entrance gate and it is part of Safari route. Recently two Safari vehicles have been introduced each with a capacity of 10 seats.
One safari drive covers Gundam safari track and another one Mallapurpenta safari route. The Safari drive covers 23 kilometers and duration is about 2 hours. The safari timings are 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM every day. The visitors are charged Rs.1200/- per trip for a maximum of 10 persons. The visitors can purchase tickets directly at the Farhabad Gate on Srisailam Highway. During safari drive, the visitors can enjoy lush green vegetation and explore the wildlife here involving spotted deer’s, sambars and Nilgai and other flora and fauna.
Eturunagaram Wildlife Sanctuary
If you want to explore one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries of Telangana, then you just can’t miss the Eturunagaram Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 110 kilometers from Warangal. The Eturunagaram Sanctuary was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1953 by the former Hyderabad Government, thanks to its rich bio-diversity.
Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary is also counted as those rare eco-regions that has various embryonic species of ephemeral elements. The natural park is spread over an area of 806 sq.kms. The perennial river DayyamVagu flows through this beautiful sanctuary which separates the wildlife sanctuary into two parts. The region is covered completely with thick natural vegetation. The plethora of water in the sanctuary attributes to the presence of reptiles like the famous Mugger crocodiles and snakes like the Cobra, Python and Krait. The best season to visit the sanctuary is from October to April.
