Nandikonda
Nandikonda is a small village located on the banks of the perennial river of Krishna in Telangana. The place is located close to the magnificent dam of Nagarjuna Sagar. Nandikonda was once part of the Ikshvaku Dynasty and this village earned prominence following the unearthing of many Buddhist structures such as pillared halls and monasteries. The relics which have been unearthed during many excavations are on display currently at the Museum of Central Archaeological Department located near the village.
There are even ruins of a historic fort, built during the era of Ikshvaku Dynasty. The citadel features massive gates, water trenches, strong fortifications, as well as a rectangle-shaped stadium. The Nagarjuna Sagar dam was initially named as the Nandikonda project and this place is well known as part of the Buddhist circuit of Telangana.
It has therefore gained a special significance in the tourism map of Telangana, marked by the immense contribution of the Ishvaku kings. The monasteries unearthed here revealed several important facts regarding the lives of Buddhist monks who had spent their time in these monasteries.
