Charming Lake with a Great History
The historic region of Warangal is not only home to extraordinary monuments with great legacy of heritage but it also charms its visitors with the very beautiful Pakhal Lake.
Pakhal is situated at a distance of about 50 kilometers to the east of Warangal city. If you want to experience bliss and tranquility, then you must not miss visiting this stunning lake on moonlit nights. The brilliantly shining moon, water gossiping on shores and the sprawling waterbody, well what else can one ask for. This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Warangal region.
Pakhal Lake, gives you a calming and soothing experience of a wonderful trip amidst undulating forest hills and dales. The lake was constructed in 1213 AD by the Kakatiya ruler Ganapathi Deva in deep forest area for agricultural purposes.
The Kakatiya rulers are known for their remarkable planning that gives rich dividends to people. They employed innovative engineering technologies in many constructions which have been lasting for hundreds of years and they created historic lakes in Telangana region, that serve as key reservoirs, to replenish groundwater, and also to irrigate thousands of acres.
Spread over an area of 30 sq. km., the lake offers a beautiful sight. Set around the shores of this lake is the Pakhal Wild Life Sanctuary with an area of 839 sq. km. It is a dense forest, which is a key habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is home to mammals like nilgai, chital, leopard, jackal, langoor, bonnet macaque, sloth bear, porcupine, and reptiles such as python, cobra, russell's viper, Indian chameleon, common krait, monitor lizard, and even marsh crocodiles. The teeming Pakhal Lake, and the abutting wildlife sanctuary entices tourists, to this wonderful destination, where one simply enjoys unison with nature.
How to Reach
Pakhal is situated about 50 km to the east of Warangal city and it is well-connected by road transport. The taluk headquarters of Narsampet is located about 12 km away.
