Bhadrachalam
Bhadrachalam is a key town of pilgrimage importance located in Bhadradri-Kothagudem District of Telangana. The temple town of Bhadrachalam is situated on the banks of Godavari River. The town is synonymous for its famous temple devoted to Lord Rama.
Bhadrachalam town has a clear and well documented history of Lord Sri Rama temple, which was built in 17th Century CE. According to Mythology, the region was once part of the Dandakaranya forest, visited by Lord Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana during their exile, also called as vanavasam. It is also believed that Parnasala which is 32 km away was the location where Rama had built a dwelling for himself and Sita, before she was abducted by the ruler of Lanka, Ravana.
The town is known for its historical significance with the Ramayana era. The name Bhadrachalam is derived from the word Bhadragiri (The Mountain Abode of Bhadra, the child of Meru and Menaka). The famous temple at Bhadrachalam is home to the Archa Murthy’s of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana and their idols are believed to be swayambhu i.e. self-manifested ones.Devotees worship Lord Rama here with special pujas atthe famous Lord Sree Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple, which is also associated with Bhakta Ramadasu.
Two major festivals are being celebrated every year, right from the era of Bhakta Ramadasu in Bhadrachalam. "VykunthaEkadasi" attracts lakhs of devotees from all over the country to the famous shrine Bhadrachalam. Another major festival, Sri Rama Navami is the most popular one at Bhadrachalam, celebrated every year during 'Chaitra shuddhanavami' on the auspicious 'Punarvasu', which is the 'JanmaNakshatra' i.e. birth star, of Lord Sri Rama. The Kalyanamahotsavam of Sri Rama with his consort Sita is held here.
