Divine Grace of ‘Ammavaru’
Hyderabad, is a city with a composite religious culture, and a region that has seen the much cherished tolerance of various cultures and faiths. In fact this has been the bedrock of the region’s diversity. Many places in the city are dotted with temples, and other religious structures, contributing in great measure for the city’s famed ethos of ‘Ganga JamunaTehzeeb’. There are many structures of highest religious and spiritual significance for Hindus in the city. While some of them are quite old, others are relatively new in terms of its history. However, there is no dearth of popularity for the temples of Hindu faith.
One of the most revered temples of Hyderabad is the Peddamma Temple, located in Jubilee Hills. There is no clear evidence regarding when the temple was established, but many local inhabitants consider that it has been here since 150 years. It is no surprise because the sprawling hub of Jubilee Hills, was till 25 years, a secluded shrub forest with rocky terrain. In fact, many such Hindu temples trace their existence to hillocks and forests. Earlier, it was a small temple that was known only to quite a few inhabitants. However after the year 1993, it gained immense popularity when the Rajagopuram was constructed and other structures were built for the convenience of devotees.
The temple witnesses hundreds of devotees pouring in everyday to seek the blessings of Amma. The Temple of Peddamma (also called Kali Maata, Durga Devi) is quite popular in the twin cities, next only to Ujjaini Mahankali Temple of Secunderabad. The temple is dedicated to Ammavaru who is fondly referred to as mother and people praying at this temple believe that the Goddess is their savior. The Telangana festival of Bonalu iscelebrated once a year, but at this popular shrine, the Bonalu utsavam is celebrated every Sunday.
Rathotsavam is celebrated every year at Sri Peddamma Temple on the day of RathaSapthami, which involves a grand chariot procession. It is considered a feast to the eyes as thousands of devotees arrive here to worship the idol of presiding deity that is taken around the well-decorated and brightly lit temple complex on this auspicious day. Devotees offer their prayers to the Goddess amidst the chanting of hymns and the lighting of firecrackers. There are various pujas held here such as `Abhishekam' everyday followed by other events like `NavagrahaHomam' `Rudra', `ChandiHomam', `Purnahuti', `DikpalaBhairavaBaliharanam' and `Annadanam' which are organized based on the day of the week or auspicious dates of Hindu calendar. Most Hindu festivals attract devotees in thousands.
