Exquisite Lac Bangles of Hyderabad
Telangana region is known for famous arts and crafts including some really special bangles that are popular all over. These are mainly found near Charminar at Laad Bazaar, considered a very old market for bangles in Hyderabad. The market is located on a major thoroughfare close to the historic Charminar.
Laad actually means lacquer, used for making bangles here from ages which carry artificial diamonds studded on them. The bangles are also studded with semi-precious stones, and pearls. Laad Bazaar, has more than 350 shops that sell world-famous lac bangles that are encrusted with the coloured stones. There are reportedly more than 140 workshops here which are involved in manufacturing a variety of bangles that are stocked and displayed in shops.
According to artisans involved in making them, it actually takes slightly more than three hours for making each lac bangle. In the initial phase, thin aluminium wires are carefully made into the form of rings. Then lac, a mixture of Belgium and titanium powder, is carefully mixed along with a base which is followed by applying desired colours on the surface. Stones are finally encrusted on the lac in the last stage.
The hard work of the bangle makers then becomes visible in form of hundreds of pattern of famous lad bangles. The major sales for these bangles are during Ramzan and other festival occasions. The bangles made here are considered a most sought after item and are especially given as souvenirs to women. For many tourists, a visit to Hyderabad is incomplete without buying the lac bangles here as part of their shopping itinerary.
The bangles which have brass and silver frames with pearls studded onto them are believed to be in great demand during weddings. Some of them are custom made especially for guests and there are several varieties of Hyderabadi bangles marking different occasions. These bangles of Hyderabad are in great demand in the Middle East. Hyderabad's bangles are displayed regularly for sale, in these countries. Tourists from West visit this bazaar and fondly buy the exquisite multi-coloured bangles, which are a symbol of Hyderabad's unique culture and traditions.
