Gadwal’s Heritage Treasure
Mahabubnagar district is largest district in the State of Telangana. Historically, the district is known as territorial district because of the multiple territorial rulers who ruled this area as compared any other area. Of these, Gadwal is most important. And, because of this, it was named ‘Vidvadgadwala’.
The heritage spot of Gadwal Fort is located near the town of Gadwal, Mahabubnagar district and between Hyderabad and Kurnool on National Highway 07. The Fort was constructed by the 17th century ruler Peda Soma Bhupaludu (Somanadri). The massive size of the walls with moats around made the Fort tough and inaccessible to intruders.
The fort is extant even three centuries later and is intact. Within the precincts situated are Sri Ramalayam, Sri Chennakesava Swamy temple, Sri Venugopala Swamy temple, and a water body (Koneru).
Pedda Soma Bhupala vanquished the (Kurnool) Nawab and took possession of cannon of 32 feet long and brought it here – a symbol of victory. It is important to note that this cannon is the biggest of all cannons found in India, and it is on display in the fort. Telangana Tourism has initiated, and has rendered tremendous efforts to restore the heritage spot.
