‘Maha Bathukamma’ Creates World Record
The main objective of celebrating Bathukamma in a grand manner is to revive the Telangana identity and hand it over to the future generations. Telangana state has a rich history of over 1,000 years and all efforts are being made on revive its past glory driven by need for a strong cultural and linguistic identity. As a result of the efforts made by the government of Telangana to promote the festival of Bathukamma, the people of Telangana have begun to identify themselves with the floral festival.
Bathukamma, which is now the Telangana state festival, entered the Guinness Book of World Records with 9,292 women participating in the floral ceremony at LB Stadium in the city in the year 2016. There have been extensive arrangements made for ‘Maha Bathukamma’ this year, with about 30,000 women participating in this bid, for creating a new Guinness record at LB Stadium in Hyderabad on September 26th, 2017.
The 30,000 women stood in the shape of the ‘Tangedu’ flower, the State flower of Telangana, with officials from the Guinness Book of World Records arriving on the spot to register this record. More than 3,000 women who have been specially trained in arranging flowers to make ‘Maha Bathukamma’ too participated in this one of its kind event. This is an attempt to create one more world record by arranging a record quantity of flowers at a time.
The grand event witnessed women from 429 mandals of the state participating in it, with arrangements made by the government of operating one bus from every mandal. The State government had allocated Rs 3 lakh for each district to provide all the amenities for women to reach the event. Due to globalization and certain influences in Telangana region, the indigenous culture was influenced largely for last few years. Hence, there is a need for Bathukamma to be revived and passed on to the future generations, which is now being done with full dedication and commitment by the government of Telangana and other cultural organizations.
