Pocharam Sanctuary
Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous destination located in Medak district of Telangana amid pristine and natural environment.
Tourists who intend to visit the place can avail of private transport for reaching here from Medak. Pocharam Forest was considered as a favourite hunting ground for the last Nizam of Hyderabad who had declared this as a wild life sanctuary in the beginning of 20th century itself. The sanctuary is named after from the Pocharam Lake which had been formed after the construction of a large scale Pocharam dam on the Allair river between the years 1916 to 1922. The sanctuary is spread over an area of more than130 square kilometers.
This area was formerly a hunting ground of the Nizam. The sanctuary operates an ecotourism center for visitors and houses many species of birds and mammals. Here there is a special center for Eco- Tourism where visitors would able to view five species of Antelopes and Deer. Summer temperature reaches 46 C & in winter, the temperature drops to 6 C. The sanctuary is home to many animals such as Leopard, Wolf, Jackal, Forest Cat, Wild Dog, Sloth Bear, Nilgai, Chinkara, Sambar, Chital, and Four horned Antelope.
Situated in the midst of lush green forest, this place has abundant flora and fauna that attracts winged visitors like Bar-Headed Goose, Brahminy Bucks, and Open Billed Stork. The right season to visit Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is from October to May and for accommodation, tourists can choose the forest inspection bungalow at Pocharam and Haritha Hotel, Medak.
Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is a forest and wildlife sanctuary which is located nearly 15 km from Medak and around 115 km from Hyderabad, Telangana.
