Pranahitha Wildlife Sanctuary
Pranahitha Wildlife Sanctuary is a well-known hub of wildlife in Telangana state which is specifically known for blackbuck, carnivorous animals as well as avian fauna.
Pranahitha Wildlife Sanctuary is located close to Mancherial town and is spread over an area of about 136 square kilometres. It consists of tropical dry and deciduous teak forests that cover nearly the 2.18 square kilometres of the reserve forests. The reserve forest of the Pranahitha Wildlife Sanctuary is located along the banks of the Pranahitha River, which is a tributary of Godavari.
Pranahitha River flows adjoining the eastern boundary of sanctuary while Godavari River runs towards the southern boundary of this sanctuary, which is also renowned for the presence of prehistoric rock formations. The major wildlife found here includes Star Tortoise, Panther, Sloth Bear, Crocodile, Python, Indian Bison and Tiger. This Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest and well protected wildlife areas of Telangana and was established in 1980, in Adilabad district in the northern part of the state.
Wildlife lovers can spend a great time here watching the Indian Porcupine and other species of wild animals such as Hyena, Wild Dogs, Palm Civet, Indian Otter, Rhesus, Langur, Forest Cat, Sloth Boar, Leopard, Tiger, Nilgai and many more. The scrub jungle and the grasslands here is an ideal habitat for Blackbuck.
The ideal time to explore the Pranahitha Wildlife Sanctuary is between October and March. There is a forest guest house for accommodation at Chinnur and Mancherial. Mancherial is the nearest town, located nearly 35 km from Pranahitha Wildlife Sanctuary. The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, about 250 km away.
