Taming the Mighty Manjeera!
There are many tourist attractions and things to explore and experience in the state of Telangana. But to enjoy the beauty of this region, one has to be well informed about the different attractions and their location, before exploring the destinations.
Telangana is blessed with many rivers, some of them perennial while others are tributaries of large rivers. Manjeera River, which originates in Maharashtra, enters Karnataka before entering the state of Telangana. The river, which is in full spate in years with successful monsoon irrigates thousands of hectares of land, recharging the underground aquifers all along the way. It merges into Godavari River downstream, while it is considered a boon for the districts of Medak, Nizamabad and Sangareddy. The Singur Dam is a reservoir built for both hydroelectric and irrigational purposes. It also serves as a source of drinking water for Hyderabad. The Singur Dam is located in Sangareddy district of Telangana.
It is a very popular tourist destination in Telangana. The deep waters of the reservoir are home to hundreds of crocodiles. The construction of this dam was completed in the year 1989, taking more than a decade. The massive reservoir constructed on Manjeera River serves as the primary source of drinking water, electric power, as well as water for irrigational needs to the nearby areas. The reservoir’s breathtaking sight along with the teeming flora and fauna surrounding the waters is a huge attraction for tourists, mainly owing to its location in the rural belt which makes it more pleasant. The natural environment of the backwaters attracts migratory birds and offers a pleasing sight to the tourists. The Singur reservoir has a live storage capacity of 29 TMC feet. This is a pipeline scheme, which is an inter river basin transfer link that feeds the Godavari River water into Krishna River basin for Hyderabad city’s needs.
