The nomenclature of Khammam is said to have derived from a temple ‘Narasimhadri’ built on a hillock in the town. The temple was referred as ‘Stamba Sikhari’ and later ‘Stambadhri’. The vertical rock under the temple is known as ‘Kamba’ and the town at the foot of the hill was called Kambamettu which gradually changed to Khammam matt and finally Khammam.
Jamalapuram Temple
Located in Jamalapuram, 85 Kms from Khammam town by road, is a very old Venkateswara Swamy temple. Also called Telangana Chinna Tirupati, “Swayambhoo” and “Swayam Vyakta” this temple is believed to be over 1000 years old and visited by a large number of devotees especially every Saturday.
Nelakondapally
Located 21 km from Khammam, Nelakondapally is a historic site encompassed by a mud fortification wall covering nearly 100 acres. Excavations have unearthed foundations of brick built viharas, wells cisterns, a mahastupa, terracotta figurines, a bronze idol of Buddha, a miniature stupa carved in lime stone and other early historic materials belonging to 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
Kusumanchi
Just 20 km from Khammam is Kusumanchi where one of the biggest Sivalingam was installed in the temple built during the Kakatiya period. A large number of devotees visit the temple during the sivarathri celebrations.
Palair Lake
Palair Lake is a man-made lake and a major source of freshwater in the Khammam district of Telangana, India. It is located at the Palair village in Kusumanchi mandal of the district and is about 30 kilometers away from the district headquarters of Khammam. The lake is an important tourist attraction in the district and water-based adventure sports and recreational facilities have been provided at the lake in recent years to develop it as a tourist site.
Lakaaram Lake
Lakaaram lake is one of the prominent lakes in Khammam town. Located nearly 4 km from the Bus stand, it is one of the major tourist places in the town.
Wyra Lake
Wyra Reservoir is a medium irrigation project constructed across the Wyra River, a tributary of Krishna River. The reservoir is located next to the Wyra town, Khammam District, Telangana. It is one of the tourist attractions in Khammam district, well known for its fishing and the green hills around it.
